Hey!
Sooooo it's been a minute I've been torn between what I should dedicate this blog to. I think I'm just gonna go with the flow.
This is the Diary a frustrated Grad...
Education is extremely important, I think we can all agree it comes in different forms formal, informal, hood... I'm sure you can come up with more.
When you as a life force take it upon yourself to go for "higher heights" and seek formal education that's a BIG DEAL. A lot of people don't ever take that step (there's nothing wrong with that) but you decided to go into this to become a professional? You build debt, lose sleep, have anxiety attacks, almost commit yourself to a psychiatric institutions and contemplate stripping all for a piece of paper from Staples(Office Max?).
(This isn't a Happy post)
Everyone encourages you and has input on your Major. When I say everyone I mean EVERYONE, even those who never took the leap themselves.
"You should be a doctor"
"Why are you studying psychology"
"Is that even a real major?"
I mean they have a whole lot more to say but to be honest I stopped listening a long time ago.
Here's my issue no-one ever says "Hey are you ready to be unemployed or in a shitty job for a hot minute after spending 4 years of your life panicking over assignments, sending death threats to your lazy group members and collecting debt?" NOPE! NO ONE!
It's extremely hard to get a job post college(A GOOD JOB) and the good jobs all want you to have more experience than you could have naturally gotten while in college its quite annoying .
So here are a few things I think you should definitely do that, I either wish I did or I did more of...
Make friends- don't leave your college experience having not made any friends. I know it's kind of weird doing the "will you be my friend?" thing with 18+ year olds but they come in handy and make it a bit more fun to be wasting your time and money for 4+ years ( Also when you skip they'll have the homework assignments)
Internships- Paid or unpaid internships will be your saving grace. This is where the magical experience employers expect you to have fresh out of the university correction program. Make the time for it.
Network- Some people hate this but in addition to internships, bumping shoulders with the right people will be a great asset. Whether you make a professional connection or just make a friend, networking will add value to your life. If done right you'll make life long connections that could turn into job opportunities in the future. Some of making it has to do with who you know/connections.
Go out- Taking breaks are essential, if you don't you'll burn out. Also things might be kinda shitty post college and partying will be less of a thing. "MIGHT"
Optimize your time- Making the most of your 24 hours will serve you extremely well. You won't find yourself hating mornings and writing blog posts in the wee hours of the morning(while regular folk sleep)
Breathe- anxiety is a thing, stressed about school, work, assignments, finals... LITERALLY BREATHE just breathe and count to 10 until you regulate.
Join Clubs- Get involved in campus activities and campus life. This will make the "Do you wanna be my friend?" thing easier.
Volunteer- This is experience, it can be recreational and looks good. Obviously do this for the right reasons and choose something in line with your interests/passions. e.g. animal lover- volunteer at an animal shelter
Make wise decisions- go to those annoying info sessions your school has, you'll find out about scholarships, job opportunities and so much more. Use your dollars wisely you're paying for more than just sitting in a classroom for an hour or two.
USE CAMPUS RESOURCES- your in college saving money is important. The career center is your friend. Save that $20 a month and use the school gym. Get familiar with campus offices (avoid running around like a headless chicken in a crisis) Use everything your tuition is paying for.
